MODERATOR: If you become Vice President, why should Americans trust that you will give Donald Trump the advice he needs to hear, and not just the advice he wants to hear?
VANCE: Of course, I've disagreed with the President, but I've also been extremely open about the fact that I was wrong about Donald Trump. I was wrong, first of all, because I believed some of the media stories that turned out to be dishonest fabrications of his record.
While Senator Vance does not directly and explicitly answer the question about giving Trump advice he needs to hear rather than what he wants to hear, his statements about previously disagreeing with the President and believing more could have been accomplished in Trump's first term can be interpreted as an implicit suggestion that he would be willing to disagree with Trump and provide needed advice, not just tell him what he wants to hear.
I've disagreed with the President... there were a lot of things... where we could have done so much more...
By acknowledging past disagreements and areas for improvement during Trump's previous term, Vance is implying he has the ability to be critical and give frank advice, even if it goes against what Trump desires. So while not a full direct answer, there are elements in Vance's response that provide an affirmative implication to the moderator's question, albeit in an indirect way.
