What we did was incredible. We re - rebuilt the military. We got the largest tax cut in history, the largest regulation cut in history...
All of the things that we've done, nobody's ever - never seen anything like - even from a medical standpoint... Choice for our soldiers, where our soldiers, instead of waiting for three months to see a doctor, can go out and get themselves fixed up and readied up, and take care of themselves and they're living.
Trump argues that Biden has failed to address issues such as immigration, foreign policy, and the economy, claiming that the country is "exploding" due to a lack of respect for Biden. However, Trump relies heavily on emotional appeals and causal oversimplifications, such as attributing job growth simply to his own deregulation, without providing concrete evidence to support his claims.
1. guilt by association • There is an element of guilt by association in Trump's statement below:
Like so many politicians, this man is just a complainer. He said we want to do this. We want to do that. We want to get rid of this tax, that tax, but he doesn't do anything. He doesn't do.
Guilt by association is a fallacy in which an individual is associated with a negative characteristic or action of a group they belong to, without providing evidence that the individual themselves possesses that characteristic or has taken that action.
In this case, Trump is associating Biden with a negative stereotype of politicians, claiming that "like so many politicians," Biden is "just a complainer" who talks about wanting to do things but doesn't take action. By doing so, Trump is attempting to discredit Biden based on his association with a group (politicians) rather than providing specific evidence of Biden's individual actions or inactions.
2. appeal to fear with loaded language • Trump uses hyperbolic language to evoke fear and anxiety in the audience, painting a picture of widespread chaos and unrest.
For three-and-a-half years, we're living in hell. We have the Palestinians and we have everybody else rioting all over the place... The whole country is exploding because of you, because they don't respect you. And they have to respect their president and they don't respect you throughout the world...
Trump attempts to create fear by stating that the country is "in hell" and "exploding" due to a lack of respect for Biden, without providing concrete evidence or reasoning behind these claims.
3. post hoc ergo propter hoc • Trump implies a direct cause-and-effect relationship between cutting regulations and job creation, ignoring other factors that could contribute to job growth.
The reason he's got jobs is because I cut the regulations that gave jobs, but he's putting a lot of those regulations back on.
Trump' implies that his deregulation policies are the sole (or main) cause of job growth, without considering other factors that may have contributed to the job market, such as the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, stimulus measures, or other policies implemented by the Biden administration.
The post hoc fallacy assumes that because one event (Trump's deregulation) preceded another event (job growth under Biden), the first event must have caused the second. However, this assumption ignores the complexity of economic systems and the multiple factors that can influence job growth.
To avoid the post hoc fallacy, it would be necessary to provide evidence that directly links Trump's deregulation policies to the current job growth and to consider alternative explanations for the observed job market trends.
Note that there being one or more apparent fallacies in the arguments presented in this article does not mean that every argument the arguer made was fallacious, nor does it mean there are not other arguments in existence for the same or similar position that are logically valid. Also note that checking for fallacies is not the same as verification of the premises the arguer starts from, such as facts that the arguer asserts or principles that the arguer assumes as the foundation for constructing arguments.
